FM Detox FAQs

Here are some questions many clients have posed either before, during or after the Fuctional Medicine Detox. Read along to become better acquainted with the FM Dextox process so you're well equipped with all the information you need to be as successful as possible right out the gate!

A Functional Medicine (FM) Detox, specifically focusing on a 2-phase liver detox, refers to a structured approach designed to enhance the liver’s natural detoxification processes. The liver detoxifies harmful substances in two main phases:

1. Bioactivation- Oxidation

2. Conjugation- Detoxification

An FM Liver Detox aims to support these phases through dietary, supplemental, and lifestyle interventions.

Expected Benefits
Increased Energy: As the body is relieved of its toxic burden, energy levels may improve.

Improved Digestion: Supporting the liver can enhance digestive health and nutrient absorption.

Clearer Skin: Detoxification can lead to improvements in skin health.

Mental Clarity: Many report better cognitive function and focus.

Weight Management: Detox can aid in weight loss by reducing inflammation and improving metabolism.

A 2-phase liver detox within the Functional Medicine framework aims to optimize liver function and overall health by supporting both phases of detoxification through a combination of diet, supplements, and lifestyle modifications.

Both the StartHER Wellness Journey and the AchieveHER Wellness Program begin with a 7, 14, or 21 Day Detox which is an FM Liver Detox using Equilife’s Dr. Cabral Detox. 

The Dr. Cabral Detox is a comprehensive detoxification program that allows your body 7, 14 or 21 days to reset and remove harmful toxins from your body. These toxins can cause weight gain, bloating, dry skin, brain fog, mood disorders, and hormone imbalances. The results from the 21-Day detox have been shown to improve many of these issues.

Each Detox Includes:

Daily Nutritional Support (DNS): (Powder)
This one-stop-shop for vitamins, minerals, protein, electrolytes, and antioxidants is the heart-and-soul of the  Detox. With 15 grams of vegan protein, Daily Nutritional Support provides your body with much-needed energy and nutrition while your body begins to rid itself of toxins. Far more than your regular protein shake, DNS also includes critical compounds that begin the detoxification process. Rather than letting your body become depleted, the DNS begins refilling and restoring your vitamin and mineral levels as your body begins detoxification.

FM Detox: (Capsules)
Utilizing the most recent research in Functional Medicine, FM Detox provides the compounds necessary to support both phases of liver detoxification. Essential amino acids, antioxidants, and botanical extracts like milk thistle help the body to capture and move toxins to the liver where they can be metabolized and removed during phase two. Ingredients like dandelion root extract support the production of bile which aids in elimination. As a diuretic, dandelion root increases water supplied to the liver which facilitates toxin elimination in the urine.

AYU Detox: (Capsules)
Incorporating ancient Ayurvedic healing traditions that support optimal detoxification, the AM Detox helps begin the detox process. Various diuretics move water to the liver and increase the solubility of toxins. Triphala, the combination of three plants: Emblica Officinalis, Terminalia bellerica, and Terminalia chebula, have been studied for their roles in gastrointestinal health. When used in conjunction, it is suggested this powerful trio promotes the growth of beneficial gut microbes Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus, while inhibiting the growth of undesirable strains.

As per the directions on the mini-brochure enclosed in your Dr. Cabral Detox kit. You will be using 1 scoop for each shake, four times a day, on days 1 & 2. On days 3-7, you will be using two scoops for each breakfast and mid-afternoon shake. The same schedule is repeated for the second week of the 14 day detox and the third week for the 21 day detox. 

It is not recommend to eat during the first 2 days in order to give your body the time to remove toxins without the stress of digesting food. However, if you are not trying to lose weight it is recommended to add spinach and blueberries in your smoothies. If it is essential that you eat during the first 2 days you may follow the guidelines for days 3-7.

Also, for the 14 and 21 Day Detoxers, if you find you have lost enough weight and aren’t looking to lose anymore after the 7 days or 14 days, you can choose to follow the guidelines for days 3-7 until you finish the entire detox program.

Each Detox contains 7 days worth of shakes; 7 breakfast and 7 afternoon shakes. If you are completing a 14 day detox, you will purchase two detoxes. If you are completing a 21 day detox, you will purchase three detoxes. The food shopping list is contained within the kit, but you would purchase your own lunch and dinners for days 3-7. (Days 1 and 2 are 4 shakes per day and are supplied for you.) 

The allowed foods are listed on the mini-brochure that comes with the kit. It is recommended to consume vegetarian lunches and approved carnivore-protein dinners if you are a meat eater, otherwise you can complete the entire detox vegetarian or vegan.

It is not recommended having coffee/caffeine during the detox in order to see the best results. However, if you are not able to give up coffee we recommend only having about 6oz of black coffee or tea in the morning. (Preferably organic)

You should be consuming about 80-100 oz of water each day throughout the detox. Much of this will be from the Detox shakes themselves (each one is about 20-24 ounces). Additional water is only needed if you feel thirsty.

If you miss drinking a shake or taking an AYU or FM capsule you can pick up with the next scheduled shake or capsules – there is no need to take additional ones.

Yes, herbs and spices are okay to use for seasoning your food.

Note: some herbs including garlic and onion can act as a prebiotic and cause bloating which may slow weight loss and increase gut dysfunction. If this happens on days 3-7 it is recommended cutting back on those products.

YES, During the detox you should stay on all prescription medication prescribed by your healthcare practitioner, please also confirm with them that none of your medications are contraindicated with any of the ingredients in the detox.

Everyone is encouraged to consult thier healthcare practitioner before any detox or protocol suggested. If you are under 18, pregnant or lactating, have liver or kidney disease, gallbladder conditions, appendicitis, eating disorder, type 1 diabetes, or if any of your medications are contraindicated with any of the ingredients in the detox, it is not recommended you complete a detox.

My goal is to help you get the best results possible, while at the same time teaching you a healthy lifestyle plan. To maintain all your results it is recommended to have a daily breakfast or mid-afternoon smoothie with the Daily Detox Shake. It is what our most successful clients do to stay feeling healthy & looking great! It is also encouraged to continue to eat clean, nutritious homecooked meals in the portions you became used to during the detox. You may add 1-2 flex meals a week so that you aren’t depriving yourself from some of your favorite foods however, it is recommended they are spaced out with at least 3 days in between the flex meals. NOTE: Flex meals are just that, meals, not days. 1 flex meal is one breakfast, lunch or dinner and is not to be confused with an entire day of eating unhealthy, processed or junk foods.

 The most important part of the “timing” is to not have a shake any earlier than 6am and once you have your first shake, make sure the remaining shakes are 3.5-4 hours apart.

If it’s your first detox, it is not recommended you exercise during the detox. The point of the detox is to give the body as much rest and relaxation possible so that your body can rid itself of toxicities without added stress. If this is not your first detox, it is recommened you listen to your body and be sure you are not over exerting yourself while you detoxify. Light stretching, yin yoga or yoga nidra are suggested as these exercises have very little energy exertion, if any. If you are an advanced detoxer and have been known to have lots of energy during the detox, it is recommended you listen to your body and be sure the exercise you choose is not adding stress as this would counteract the detoxification process. 

The FM Detox can be done in increments of 7 days, 14 days or 21 days. Each box contains the amount of supplements for 7 days. It also comes with a mini-brochure that details a schedule for one week. If you are completing a 14 day detox or a 21 day detox, you will receive 3 boxes to total 21 days worth of supplements. Each week is completed as the brochure indicates with Days 1 & 2 fasting shake days and days 3-7 breakfast shake, vegetarian lunch and clean protein dinner. If weight loss is desired, each week you will fast days 1 & 2 and add in meals days 3-7. If weight loss is not desired, you may fast the first two days and include meals from day 3-21.

NOTE: The StartHER Wellness Journey begins with a 21 day detox and you will recieve 3 boxes of 7 days worth of supplements totaling the 21 days. The detox does not supply the lunches and dinners of days 3-7, 10-14, or 17-21 and a list of approved foods are included in the mini-brochure so that you may plan your meals containing those ingredients for those days. 

Everyone is different and some may experience all of these symptoms in the first few days while others may experience only some of these symptoms and still others not notice anything different. The reason for this is that your body is detoxifying and as it does so, you may experience a Herxheimer reaction. This is due to the fact your body is releasing stored toxins, which your body is trying to process and eliminate as quickly as possible. Headaches, fatigue, and nausea are also common if you have altered your normal routine and are no longer consuming processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, etc. This causes your body to have withdrawal symptoms from these items, especially during the first 2 days. It should be gone by day 3 or 4. Please note: discontinue the FM Detox if you have any concerns regarding symptoms or if the symptoms do not stop.
